FAQs

If I’m a member of Empower Health, will Dr. Trujillo be my primary care provider (PCP)?

The short answer is no. That being said, as a member of Empower Health, Dr. Trujillo will provide you with personalized treatment, guidance and an extensive lab workup that will address 80-90% of most individual's medical needs. He won’t however be considered your PCP, so we advise you to keep your own PCP to oversee your routine screenings, sick visits, and unrelated chronic medication management.

Do you accept health insurance?

We do not accept health insurance. We operate on a completely transparent direct-pay membership model in order to provide our patients with the highest level of care possible. Bear in mind that even though we don’t accept insurance, you may be eligible to use your HSA/FSA for payment of services.   Additionally, if you don’t have an HSA/FSA, most Empower Health services qualify as medical expenses that can be deducted on an itemized tax return. Check out our HSA/FSA program page for more details.

Will services provided by Empower Health be eligible for payment through my HSA/FSA?

Eligibility varies based upon whether you have a medical condition that can be treated through weight management. Often times these qualifying conditions are unknown to the patient until we uncover them during our initial workup. Learn more by visiting our HSA/FSA page

How much does it cost to be an Empower Health member?

Exact pricing varies and will be disclosed during your free consultation. Meantime, here are a few things you should know about pricing:

  • Empower Health is a membership-based clinic, we do not accept health insurance
  • New patients pay a reasonable onboarding fee for the comprehensive first month workup then a fixed and recurring monthly rate beginning in the second month.
  • No other surprise charges will ever (ever!) be expected at the time of your visit or anytime afterward.
  • Additional fees may apply only for optional add-on services.
Do you prescribe GLP-1 medications for weight loss (Semaglutide (Ozempic/ Wegovy), Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/ Zepbound))?

Yes. (commercial and compounded versions)

That being said, weight loss injections are by no means the core of this program. We are very selective on who we think would be good candidates for these medications and we only prescribe them if that individual is proactively working on the core underlying issues regarding their health & weight. In this context, these injections can be extremely powerful tools.

Unfortunately these medications are being used more and more frequently in our population as a quick fix or a crutch. This is the worst thing you could do. At Empower Health we are confident that relying on these medications without doing the work will result in weight loss but you will be extremely high risk to gain it all back and more.

Will you be ordering labs and adjusting medications?

Absolutely! If you sign up as a patient, we will monitor labs for changes and will continuously adjust your medications to wean you off any that become unnecessary as your health improves.

Do you have to be in the state of Utah to join Empower Health?

Yes. Unfortunately Dr. Trujillo is only licensed to provide medical care in the state of Utah.

What’s your health and dietary approach?

Empower Health provides a functional and integrative approach to health and weight management. Meaning we will prioritize addressing the root problems while being open to as many different areas of discipline as we need.

When you sign up for membership at Empower Health, Dr. Trujillo will create a personalized plan designed just for you. This plan will help you reach your health goals, no matter what they are; whether you're looking to lose weight, reverse chronic illness, or improve your metabolism. Every plan will include customized variations of a low-carb healthy-fat nutrition plan with an emphasis on protein and real food. This will all be strategically balanced alongside positive lifestyle interventions that address core issues (your ‘barriers to change’) that could prevent you from achieving long-term health and weight loss.

Do you do in-office body composition and weight checks?

Yes. We use a full body composition analysis scale at every visit in addition to collecting body measurements at regular intervals.

Do you offer a maintenance plan?

Yes, we offer a maintenance plan to anyone who has completed the foundational training and reached their initial health or weight goals. This plan is only available to those who qualify and have been approved for the Maintenance program.

Do you support or endorse a ketogenic diet?

If you’re on a ketogenic diet, Dr. Trujillo is more than qualified to guide and support you 100% but we also understand that this approach is not for everyone. We make every attempt to customize nutrition plans to fit every patient’s unique needs and not force an approach that may not be a good fit for you.

Can I be seen for weight loss even if I do not have any other conditions or health problems?

Absolutely! While Dr. Trujillo does specialize in Family Medicine & Obesity Medicine, the clinic is focused on improving our patients’ metabolic health, which in turn results in long-lasting weight loss and improved overall health.  We welcome anyone who simply wants to improve their health, lose weight and get some support in making some lifestyle adjustments. We’re well equipped to help anyone reach their weight and health goals, no matter what they are.

Can I cancel my membership after I’ve signed up?

Yes, you can cancel your membership at any time after the initial 4-month commitment.

If I need more accountability can I be seen more frequently than once a month?

Absolutely, existing members can request add-on visits at any time for a discounted flat fee.

How much exercise will I be required to do?

We believe the appropriate balance of nutrition to exercise is 90/10. Meaning your overall progress is 90% about what you eat and 10% about exercise. That being said, this percentage varies from patient to patient based on where they are along their journey and how much their mental health plays a role in their consistency with the nutrition plan.

We normally don’t even talk about exercise for the first couple of months because there is so much progress we can make with nutrition. That being said, we will never slow you down if exercise is already a priority, rather we’ll teach you how to optimize its contribution to your overall plan.

What are your clinic hours?

Empower Health is open Monday through Thursday during standard business hours, from 9:00 am - 5 pm MST.

However, should you need to see Dr. Trujillo outside these standard business hours, every attempt will be made to accommodate you and your schedule. We’ll also make telehealth visits available for when you just can't make it to the office or when you are out of town.

How long will it take before I see results?

You’ll see and feel results immediately. If you can lay down your defenses, trust the process, and put in the work we are positive you will quickly see the progress you’re looking for.

While the scale will change in your favor, we will help you focus on the more important aspects of your progress which will give you the confidence you need to maintain your progress for life. These aspects include manipulating habit loops, focusing on non-scale victories, removing fixed thinking patterns, and helping you get out of your own head. This is where the real results are won.

What payment methods are accepted?

Empower Health monthly membership fees can be collected through debit, credit, HSA/FSA card or direct bank transfer. We are currently unable to accept cash payments.

Payment methods may be changed or updated at any time during your membership.
